Ubuntu 9.10 RC

The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the Release Candidate for Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop and Server editions, Ubuntu 9.10 Server for UEC and EC2, and the Ubuntu Netbook Remix. We consider this release candidate to be complete, stable, and suitable for testing by any user. Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop edition improves on the work of 9.04 to get you going faster, with improved start-up times and a streamlined boot experience.

Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 1 VMware Image

Welcome to Karmic Koala Alpha 1, which will in time become Ubuntu 9.10. Development for Karmic just recently opened and many of the new features have not yet started to appear. Currently the changes include the synchronisation of packages from Debian Sid, a new kernel based on 2.6.30, and the latest development release of GNOME, 2.27.1. Other features: technology for power management and laptop Fn key maps was moved from hal to DeviceKit-power and udev-extras; new Intel video driver architecture available for testing; Karmic uses GCC 4.4 as the default compiler.

PC-BSD 7.0 Beta 1

The PC-BSD team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of PC-BSD version 7-BETA1! This release marks the first PC-BSD based on FreeBSD 7-STABLE and the KDE 4.1 desktop, and also provides many new ways to install, including DVD, USB and network/Internet installation choices. Our PBI site has also been updated with a wide variety of software ready for PC-BSD 7, with more being added weekly. This release is beta, which means things are still being worked on and fixed in preparation for the final release. Users are encouraged to report bugs to our bug database or our testing mailing list.

Mandriva Linux 2008.1 Alpha 2 VMware Image

The second pre-release of Mandriva Linux 2008.1 is here. This pre-release brings a near-final snapshot of KDE 4.0 (final 4.0 packages are currently being uploaded to the Cooker repositories), new NVIDIA and ATI drivers, the chance to test the experimental Nouveau open source driver for NVIDIA cards, kernel 2.6.24-rc7, and more.

DesktopBSD 1.6

It is my great pleasure to announce the availability of DesktopBSD 1.6 final. This release is the first stable release of the 1.6 branch and comes with a great number of new features and improvements. It is based on the second release candidate of FreeBSD's upcoming production release 6.3 and provides the user with an enhanced KDE 3.5.8 desktop environment.

Mandriva Linux 2008.1 Alpha 1 VMware Image

Kicking off the 2008.1 development cycle in earnest, the first alpha is here. This alpha features X.Org 7.3, KDE 3.5.8, KDE 4.0 RC2 (in /contrib), GNOME 2.21, kernel 2.6.24, OpenOffice.org 2.3, new NVIDIA and ATI proprietary drivers, PulseAudio by default and more. Despite being a first alpha, it is also in a fairly stable and reliable state, though as always, we do not suggest you use it in a production environment. It is available in Free and One editions, with i586 and x86_64 DVDs for the Free edition and an i586, KDE-based CD for the One edition

Centos 5.1 Desktop VMware Image

We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of CentOS-5.1 for the i386 and x86_64 architectures. CentOS-5.1 is based on the upstream release 5.1, and includes packages from all variants including Server and Client. All upstream repositories have been combined into one, to make it easier for end users to work with. And the option to further enable external repositories at install time is now available in the installer. This is the first release where we are also publishing a special 'netinstall' ISO image that can be used to start a remote install.
